Can I Get Married In My Garden?

Choosing your wedding venue and setting the date will be two of the most important items on your wedding to-do list and your choice of venue will have a big impact on other decisions you make as you plan your wedding. Unfortunately, you are unable to legally marry in your garden in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Weddings must take place in a venue that has been given a full and legal marriage licence by the local authority. These usually include churches, wedding venues or registry offices.

Even venues that have a license are governed by strict rules on exactly where a wedding ceremony may take place and the number of guests who can be present. In theory you could apply for a license for your own garden, but it would be extremely costly, time-consuming, and hardly worthwhile for one event.

If an outdoor ceremony is what you have your heart set on, Cambridge Marina is a picture-perfect tranquil location in which to exchange your vows. Set well away from roads and the hustle and bustle of daily life, with the gentle meander of the river Great Ouse under an enormous sky you can swap traffic sounds for birdsong. Seals sunbathe lazily by the marina and ducks land gracefully on the river. This area is one of the few places where you will find endangered turtle doves thriving. A haven for wildlife and a timeless backdrop, it is hard to imagine a more picturesque setting for your wedding photography.

Accessed by a rustic wooden bridge that was handmade by local craftsmen, the little private island makes the most romantic setting. Our wooden gazebo provides the focal point and is a blank canvas for you to decorate in your chosen theme. From billowy silk hangings to a trellis of roses –  the choice is yours; we can advise and have plenty of photographs for inspiration.

The ceremony

The civil ceremony is conducted by a registrar and couples exchange vows in the company of their guests before signing the wedding register. For more information see our blog titled Everything you wanted to know about a civil wedding (but were afraid to ask).

What about a blessing instead?

This is an option if you prefer to have the legal ceremony at a registry office and have a religious or humanist officiant or even a friend or family member conduct your blessing on the day. There are all sorts of options and just as no two couples are the same, no two weddings are the same either. We have an experienced events team who will work with you to ensure that your big day goes exactly as you imagined.

But what if it rains?

Well, we can help with many things but unfortunately, we cannot control the weather. On the day, if the weather is inclement the ultimate decision as to whether the wedding can take place outdoors belongs to the registrar. But if it does rain, we will seamlessly move the ceremony into our stunning purpose-built wedding marquee. With huge floor to ceiling windows and a panoramic riverscape view you will still be able to feel immersed in the beautiful surroundings without getting wet.

And unlike the marquee in the film “About Time”, our structure sits on a solid base with a dedicated decked entrance and terrace and will stay put whatever the weather has in store.

The wedding breakfast and reception

After the ceremony guests will be able to mingle over drinks while your photographer captures the day for the photograph album. Then it is time to take your seats for the wedding breakfast. The large Marquee is extremely versatile and can be zoned or opened up according to your requirements. Leading from the dedicated decked entrance area, the Riverside Suite has a feature bar and is perfect for drinks and mingling. This area leads onto the large marquee which can accommodate 350+ guests on round tables, with room for entertainment and a dance floor.

We work with some of the finest caterers in the business. Choose from our preferred list or let us know if you have a special wish. Couples can choose from a fully stocked bar or dry hire option.

Whether you exchange vows on your own private little island or in the splendour of the light and airy Marquee, we will create an atmosphere which is truly sublime and the perfect backdrop for your memorable day. Why not make the ultimate stylish entrance and arrive by boat – a unique moment and wonderful photo opportunity!
